Converted to F-89J, modified to carry the Douglas MB-1 Genie nuclear-tipped unguided air-to-air rocket. 10/1957: Assigned to the USAF 319th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, based at Bunker Hill AFB, IN. 2/1960: Assigned to the Wisconsin ANG 128th Consolidated Maintenance Squadron, based at General Mitchell Field, WI. 5/1961: Assigned to the Wisconsin ANG 126th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, based at General Mitchell Field, WI. 5/1962: Assigned to the Iowa ANG 124th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, based at Des Moines AP, IA. 5/1969: Dropped from inventory by transfer to USN. 6/1981: Transported by truck to March AFB Museum. Ik vond deze kit ergens in 1998 in een lokale supermarkt waar hij stof lag te vergaren. Jaar na jaar werd de doos groezeliger, en zakte de prijs.
Blijkbaar wou niemand deze kit. Het gaat dan ook om een zo goed als volledige "blank metaal" versie, iets waar menig modelbouwer (mezelf inbegrepen)
in de pre-Alclad jaren voor terugschrok. De prijs bleef steeds verder zakken, tot de kit nog slechts € 15 kostte. Omdat de doos nogal beschadigd was, kon
ik er nog € 3 afpingelen. Nadien bleef de kit nog een drie of vier jaar in m'n kast staan, Alclad was intussen gemeengoed geworden en dus begon ik er eindelijk eens aan. Behalve op het internet zag ik nergens elders een exemplaar van deze kit - gemaakt of nog onaangeroerd. Wellicht was het ditmaal geen commercieel succes voor Revell. Niettemin was het maken ervan probleemloos, echt een fluitje van een cent. De enige pasproblemen deden zich voor bij de verbinding tussen vleugel en romp. Hoewel ik herhaaldelijk plamuurde en schuurde, laat de meedogenloze Alclad daar toch nog een paar putjes zien. Voor mij was het de eerste kit die zo goed als volledig in metaal gespoten is - een experiment waar ik nogal tevreden over ben. Ik slaagde er in het hele ding te bouwen tussen begin oktober en eind november 2008, supersnel voor mijn doen. |
I found this kit back in 1998 in a local supermarket where it sat on the shelf gathering dust. Year after year the box got cheaper and more and more grubby.
Apparently nobody wanted to buy this kit. Remember, it is almost entirely bare metal, something many a modeller (including myself) balked at in the pre-Alclad days.
The price kept on dropping until the kit was at a mere € 15. As the box was rather damaged, I managed to pinch off another € 3. After that the kit sat on my shelf for another three or four years and by then Alclad had become commonplace so I finaly got crackin'. Except for the internet I have never seen another of these kits, be it assembled or untouched. I fear this wasn't a great commercial succes for Revell. Construction nevertheless went without a hitch, a real breeze. The only fit problem I encountered was at the wing/fuselage joint. In spite of repeated puttying and sanding, the ruthless Alclad still reveals some flaws. It was my first attempt at an almost completely bare metal plane - an experiment of which I'm rather satisfied. I managed to build the whole thing between the start of october and the end of november 2008 - no mean feat considering my average speed in these matters! |

DataKit: Revell 4568, built straight out of the box.Glue: Almost exclusively Slater's Mek-Pak, some superglue and white glue for the clear parts. Putty, polishing compound and masking tape all from Tamiya. Decals: from the kit Paint: Humbrol enamels for the droptank, cockpit and anti-glare panel. Alclad (several shades) for the wings and fuselage. Sealing: Johnson's Future. (clear parts only) Airbrush: Badger 150 Wash: artist's oil paints thinned with turpentine in the cockpit, china ink diluted with water and detergent aroun the control panels. Weathering: none this time: ANG kites were kept pristine. Varnish: none Documentation: Only the internet. Very little to find, compared with other jets. |
